Better notes helped me be a more present pastor
The real value of an AI note-taking system is what it gives back to the people in the room.
The moment that made it real
At a funeral, I noticed something that changed how I thought about AI. With Granola helping me capture notes, I could laugh, cry, and be fully present instead of furiously trying to write everything down. I was grateful to be fully there.
I had been thinking about better notes as an organizational improvement. In that moment, the benefit was much more personal: I could listen without worrying so much about what I might forget.
Presence is part of the work
A lot of church work happens in conversations. Someone shares an idea, asks a difficult question, or mentions something you need to remember. You want to listen carefully, and you also know your memory has limits. Trying to do both at once can pull you out of the moment.
Better notes do not make you a better listener automatically. But the right support can reduce the pressure to choose between listening and remembering. That is the kind of technology I want around ministry: something that helps me pay attention to a person.
The tool needs a boundary
This is not a recommendation to record every pastoral conversation. Permission, context, organizational policy, and the sensitivity of what someone is sharing matter. Some conversations should stay outside an AI system entirely. A useful tool still needs a leader willing to turn it off.
I still need to review the notes. A name can be wrong. A summary can miss what someone meant. Good support makes that review easier; it does not take away my responsibility.
A better reason to build a system
When I think about getting my note-taking system dialed in, I think about that freedom to be present. Capturing words is useful. Creating room to hear someone is the point.
